Planning a World Trip (Part 1)

TRAVEL MAP.png

When we started planning our adventure, Alan already had a lot of practice because he is usually in charge of organizing our holidays. We do not do “package deals” but find out what we want to do and start comparing, researching and booking. However, this world exploration requires next level stuff!

One of the first things to consider when you have decided to go on a big trip is off course, where you want to go. My answer was “everywhere” but as much as we’d like to just travel forever, we are not cut out to be long-term nomads. Our bucket lists therefore had to be dissected and merged to come up with our ideal world trip that includes our must-sees; fits our timeframe; and allows us to travel in reasonable comfort.

To create the (sort of) final list (it is still shifting and changing) we asked our friends who had been to the places we wanted to see, read up on our top destinations on sites like lonelyplanet and  tripadvisor and depended on our super knowledgeable Travel Manager Alyssa. Whenever I was in doubt I actually googled “why should I go to…” and as it turns out that gives you access to so many awesome travel blogs each with unique viewpoints and focusing on more than just the standard main attractions. Another great tip is using YouTube to check out documentaries or even just other traveler’s videos from the places you want to explore.

Rome2Rio is the best website we found to check out how long it will take you from A to B and how many options of transport there are. It even gives you estimated pricing and directs you to websites where you can book travel. [Note: Great as a rough base, but you still need to check Skyscanner or other cheap booking sites to make sure you don’t miss out on a deal]

In terms of the timeframe, we were beyond lucky and each scored sabbaticals – we can take time off and still have a job when we come back! The question was therefore how long we can be on the road before we spend all our savings… That magic number is 7 – we will be gone for 7 months.

So without further ado, here is our sort-of-final-list:

Canada Peru Morocco Jodhpur
Vancouver Lima Egypt Mumbai
Whistler Cusco Jordan Goa
USA Bolivia Italy Australia
Los Angeles La Paz Albania Sydney
San Fransisco Uyuni Montenegro
Yosemite Chile Croatia
Las Vegas San Pedro Slovenia
Austin Santiago Hungary
New Orleans Puerto Natales Poland
Memphis Argentina Czech Republic
Washington DC El Calafate Germany
New York Buenos Aires France (Disney)?
Miami Iguazu Falls India
Colombia Brazil Delhi
Cartagena Iguazu Falls Vrindavan
Santa Marta Rio Agra (Taj Mahal)
Medelin Manuaus (Amazon) Jaipur
Bogota Sao Paulo (transit only) Ranthambore Park

I hope this helps those of you who are planning a trip and -like me if I did not have Alan- do not know where to start.

It is both super exciting and stressful, but well worth it! In German we say “Vorfreude ist die beste Freude” which means anticipation is the best part.
